LOS ANGELES — Scientists have detected a spike in underground rumblings on a section of California’s San Andreas Fault that produced a magnitude-7.8 earthquake in 1857.

What these mysterious vibrations say about future earthquakes is far from certain. But some think the deep tremors suggest underground stress may be building up faster than expected and may indicate an increased risk of a major temblor.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, monitored seismic activity on the fault’s central section between July 2001 and February 2009 and recorded more than 2,000 tremors. The tremors lasted mere minutes to nearly half an hour.

Unlike earthquakes, tremors occur deeper below the surface and the shaking lasts longer.

During the study period, two strong earthquakes hit - a magnitude-6.5 in 2003 and a magnitude-6.0 a year later. Scientists noticed the frequency of the tremors doubled after the 2003 quake and jumped six-fold after 2004.

Tremor episodes persist today. Though the frequency of tremors have declined since 2004, scientists are still concerned because they are still at a level that is twice as high as before the 2003 quake.

The team also recorded unusually strong rumblings days before the 2004 temblor.

Results of the research appear in Friday’s issue of the journal Science. The work was funded by the U.S. Geological Survey and National Science Foundation.

“The fact that the tremors haven’t gone down means the time to the next earthquake may come sooner,” said Berkeley seismologist and lead researcher Robert Nadeau.

Nadeau first discovered tremors deep in the San Andreas Fault in 2005. Before that, the phenomenon was thought only to occur in Earth’s subduction zones, where one tectonic plate dives beneath another.

“Exclusive”……………………………………………..Jessica Alba

Jessica never even saw me! No way I was gonna let her whip out one of her patented frowns on me! Instead, I get the plump luscious lips of Jessica Alba that all men go ga-ga for. Ha ha. Gotcha miss grumpy pants!  I hardly ever photograph her but she literally walked right towards me today so I could not help myself. She looks pretty darn good when not frowning too!

“Exclusive”………………………………………………………………Fabio

Jennifer Anniston sells magazines when she is on the covers, but I don’t think she can even hold a flame to Fabio and how many “books” he has sold since he started baring his pecs.  I saw Fabio out today having lunch with a friend when I asked him for a picture.  Of course he is cool as ever and obliged to pose for me.  Since he was so cool, I had to ask him how he manages to stay so healthy and in shape with all the “meet and greets” he does and shows that he films.  Being ever so cool, he tells me to come to his car and he shows me.  Just when I thought he was going to break me in half and stuff me in the trunk, he pulls out a container that he said he uses all the time.  I asked him to pose with it so I can show everyone across the nation too!  And here it is!

The secret to Fabio’s coveted body is “Healthy Planet’s” Whey protein.  From what I read about Whey Protein: It promotes a positive influence on muscle synthesis, boosts the immunity system, and helps with red blood cell production too. Now that the secret is out, I am going to buy some and hit the gym a little. I wanna feel better and stronger too!  Maybe I could be on the cover of a book?  It might just be a comic book, but I am going to dream!!!

What???………………………………………..”Michael Jackson memorial cost LA $1.4 million.”

Los Angeles spent $1.4 million to provide security, traffic control and other services for Michael Jackson’s memorial service, city officials said as they looked for ways to have others help the financially troubled city pick up the bill.

The amount included $1.1 million in overtime pay for the 4,173 officers who worked to secure Staples Center, Forest Lawn cemetery and other areas that attracted fans and members of the media, the Police Department said in a statement.

City officials said Wednesday that the remaining amount covered traffic control, cleanup and other costs related to Tuesday’s public memorial service, which was attended by a total of more than 17,000 fans and watched by tens of millions of people around the world.

Matt Szabo, a spokesman for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, hailed the tally a success. He said it was “far less” than the initial estimate of $4 million.

Nonetheless, city attorney Carmen Trutanich said his office was investigating how the city can legally press third parties to pick up at least some of the tab.

Trutanich aims to have a report ready for the City Council by Friday, said spokesman John Franklin.

The city has also set up a Web site urging fans to make tax-deductible donations through credit cards, PayPal or check to help defray costs.

Fans have thus far donated $17,000, but contributions have been hampered by technical problems, Szabo said in a statement.

The site received so many hits that the servers crashed Tuesday night and several times Wednesday, Szabo said. The city’s information technology department is working to rectify the problems.

Anticipating about 250,000 people would converge on downtown streets for the service, the Police Department deployed 3,240 officers starting at midnight. When only about 1,000 fans showed up, police brass let about 1,000 officers go early.

AEG Live, the owner-operator of Staples Center, has not committed any money to the Jackson memorial, which it organized and promoted. Company spokesman Michael Roth did not return messages on Wednesday.

City Controller Wendy Greuel called on the City Council to create a policy declaring who should pay for city services associated with such events.

In a letter to the emergency management department, Greuel criticized the nearly $49,000 expense for police officers’ lunches, which were ordered from a restaurant located “80″ miles from Los Angeles.

Greuel said her office called a local sandwich shop that could have provided box lunches for less than $17,500. The purchase would have had the added benefit of supporting a local business, she said.
The Jackson memorial was the second recent event that resulted in extraordinary costs at a time when the city is a half-billion dollars in debt and facing employee layoffs.

Last month’s victory parade for the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers cost an estimated $2 million.

AEG Live gave $1 million to the city for that event and other private donors stepped in.
